How to Format Your Posts

Make Your Posts Beautiful with Fortmatting

We use a strict subset of Markdown to format text. Markdown allows you to use rich formatting without having to know HTML.

Bold Text

To use bold text, insert your text between two stars, **, on each side.

This line has **an example of bold** text.

The above line produces “This line has an example of bold text.”

Italic Text

Italic text is handled exactly like bold text except instead of two stars, use only one.

This line has *an example of italic* text.

The above line produces “This line has an example of italic text.”

You can mix both styles.

This line has *an example of bold and italic* text.

The above line produces “This line has an example of bold and italic text.”

Using Quotations

To quote someone precede the text, on a new line, with a greater-than bracket, or >.

> One should always be in love. That is the reason one should
never marry.

The above line renders the following:

One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry.

You can use bold text inside quotes.

When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life; now that I am old I know that it is.

Corrections

If you ever feel the need to correct something but keep a record of it, you can. Insert corrections as you would bold text, but surround your text with two tildes instead of stars.

Robin Van Persie is ~~an Arsenal player~~ a traitor.

This produces the following text.

Robin Van Persie is an Arsenal player a traitor.

Titles

There are two levels of titles h2, and h3. To create a title start a new line with ## or ### depending on the level you want.

## Nixon Resigns
### He urges a time of 'Healing'; Ford will take office today

The above produces the following title:

Nixon Resigns

He urges a time of ‘Healing’; Ford will take office today

Horizontal Rules

You can create a horizontal rule to divide your post into sections. Anywhere, on a new line, type three or more dashes, ’-’.

---

The above text produces a divider like the one below.

Images

See the post titled Using Images for instructions on using images.

Lists

For unordered (bulleted) lists use hyphens (-) as list markers.

- Swiss Army knife
- Duct tape
- No gun

This above block produces the following list.

  • Swiss Army knife
  • Duct tape
  • No gun

You can create ordered lists by using numbers and dots instead of dashes.

1. Swiss Army knife
2. Duct tape
3. No gun
  1. Swiss Army knife
  2. Duct tape
  3. No gun
